Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation’s Take a Hike program named recipient of a 2013 Downtown Merit Award by the International Downtown Association.
For Immediate Release:
(New York, NY. Monday, October 7, 2013)— During its World Congress & 59th Annual Conference the International Downtown Association recognized Downtown Cleveland Alliance with a Downtown Merit Award for its neighborhood-based partner Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation’s work and initiatives related to the Take a Hike program.
Take a Hike was among 13 qualified entries in the category of Events and Programming. Submitted projects and initiatives in this category come from those organizations working to further their city centers by completing the following:
• Focused on programs and events that improved the image and vitality of downtown with events that promote downtown and attract visitors.
• Delivering projects that communicate the vision, mission, function, and achievements of the downtown or business district association.
From May through September each year, the Take a Hike program offers free, guided walking tours of five neighborhoods in Downtown Cleveland, including the Gateway District, Warehouse District, PlayhouseSquare, Canal Basin Park in the Flats and the Civic Center. Each tour features actors and actresses portraying important Clevelanders from the past, such as John D. Rockefeller, Garrett Morgan, Alan Freed, and others.
Take a Hike celebrated its 5th anniversary in 2013. “The program highlights Cleveland’s important national role in the political and social history of the United States. In addition, the redevelopment of Downtown Cleveland has, at its core, the adaptive reuse of historic buildings and the rejuvenation of its historic neighborhoods – all highlighted on a Take a Hike tour”, said Thomas Yablonsky, Executive Director of the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation. According to Kelly Lange, Program Director, “13,600 people have enjoyed a Take a Hike tour during the first five seasons. Positive feedback from locals and tourists alike has been simply amazing.” Lange adds,”These tours would not be possible without a strong collaboration of community and corporate partners.” HGNC would like to recognize Dollar Bank as Presenting Sponsor of the tours. Take a Hike is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
