Congratulations to Kira Hennessey for being awarded Heritage Ohio’s Main Street Volunteer of the Year Award! Ms. Hennessey is Vice Chair of the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation Board of Directors. She is an employee of Calfee and a Warehouse District resident. She generously gives of her time, talents, energy and support in both the Gateway District and Warehouse District, and Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation and Heritage Ohio are pleased to recognize her efforts to date. The award was presented to Ms. Hennessey on Tuesday, October 6th during Heritage Ohio’s Annual Revitalization and Preservation Awards Ceremony held at the Historic Southern Theatre in Columbus.
Heritage Ohio is the statewide, not-for-profit preservation organization, dedicated to encouraging and assisting people and organizations to protect, preserve and revitalize Ohio’s heritage. Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation is proud to be a Heritage Ohio Main Street Program.
The Take a Hike program was recognized with a State Historic Preservation Office Award in the category of Public Education and Awareness on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the State Historic Preservation Office Awards Luncheon held at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus. If you haven’t taken a hike yet, you still have time in 2015. The extended Take a Hike tour season, presented by Dollar Bank, is offering a tour of Historic Euclid Avenue every Saturday now through December 12th. Meet at 10 AM in the Arcade (401 Euclid Avenue) to enjoy a tour that combines portions of the summer Gateway District and Playhouse Square tours. The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours in length and feature historic figures from the past, such as Frances Payne Bolton, Alan Freed, Milton Krantz, Garrett Morgan and Mayor Tom Johnson. Enjoy learning about the Arcade, the 5th Street Arcades, the 9, the Statler Arms, the Playhouse Square neighborhood and, of course, the GE Chandelier.
The Extended Take a Hike season is made possible with support from The Arcade, Metropolitan at the 9, Playhouse Square, Playhouse Square District Development Corporation and Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation.
Groups of ten or more are asked to call 216-771-1994 in advance. These free tours do go rain or shine. Donations are encouraged to help fund future tours.

Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument will be offering Tunnel Tours from 10 AM to 6 PM (must be in line by 5 PM). You can tour inside and underneath the Monument on Public Square during these special tours. The Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument honors those men and women of Cuyahoga County who served their country during the Civil War (1861-1865). Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation’s Take a Hike tour of Historic Euclid Avenue will be offered from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Come learn about the Arcade, the 5th Street Arcades, the 9, the Statler Arms, the Playhouse Square neighborhood and, of course, the GE Chandelier on this educational and entertaining tour. Meet “ghosts” from the past along the way as actors portray important Clevelanders in history, including Garrett Morgan and Milton Krantz.
