Kicking off May 15th, Take a Hike, presented by Dollar Bank, is Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation’s award-winning walking tour program now in its eighth season. Over 22,200 people have enjoyed the tours to date! New this year, the character of librarian Linda Eastman is being added to the Civic Center tour, and the tour schedule has been changed to offer more people the opportunity to take different tours on different days of the week.
You, your friends and family are invited to explore Downtown Cleveland’s vibrant neighborhoods, including the Gateway District, Warehouse District, Playhouse Square, Civic Center and Canal Basin Park, on one of five, free, guided tours offered each week through September 18th. History comes to life along the tour routes as talented cast members portray important Clevelanders from the past.
Don’t miss the special Canal Basin Park tour being offered on Saturday, May 21st as part of the River Day festivities. (The Canal Basin Park tour is normally offered on Sunday mornings.) On River Day, meet at the Flat Iron at 1:oo PM. The tour will end at the Lorenzo Carter Cabin, a replica of the original home of Cleveland’s first permanent settler, which will be open for visitation from 2 to 4 PM.
Take a Hike tours are free, with donations encouraged to help match grants from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and Ohio & Erie Canalway. The tours also receive support from Downtown Cleveland Alliance. Reservations are appreciated for large groups, but not necessary otherwise. Tours depart rain or shine at their scheduled time.
The tours were featured in an article entitled “Free Take a Hike tours put Cleveland in touch with its history” by Sabrina Eaton on Cleveland.com on May 5th.
